The 5th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry was the only cavalry regiment from Massachusetts composed exclusively of colored men. Organized at Camp Meigs, Readville in 1863 and the winter following. In June of 1864, the regiment was ordered to Pont Lookout, Maryland to guard Confederate prisoners at that post.
